A Tribute to Professor Otto Soemarwoto

Prof. Otto Soemarwoto was the Great Teacher of Padjajaran University, Indonesia; primarily concentrating his expertise in environmental studies, policy and issues. Monday, March 31, 2008 was the date of his rest in peace.

I obviously do not have any face-to-face experience with him, although I am surely eager to. However, it doesn’t mean that I don’t have any personal impression for his charisma. I was lucky to buy Majalah Tempo (The Tempo Magazine) on January 14, 2008, which performed reports about him in such pages.

I have to thank Tempo for writing about him that allow me to learn a lot. Prevailed his professorship in the age of 34 on 1960; in Indonesia he was the youngest professor ever. A shaft of pride shines inside my heart knowing that basically I and he had the same university history. He dedicated himself to Padjajaran University, but he accomplished his undergraduate degree in Gadjah Mada, the university I am currently studying in.

As a scientist, he put his total dedication in the field of science. One of his structural occupations was the director of Kebun Raya Bogor (The Bogor Botanical Garden). As an associate of elite official in his age (e.g. 1st president of Indonesia, Soekarno), he had also an opportunity to be a politician. However, he refused to be and this decision led him to restrain his independency to struggle for environment.

I firstly know him through his commentary on Indonesian flood happens at so many places, including our capital city Jakarta, this season. I only saw him at a glance, but when I then read his long journey, I was quite much fascinated. He had campaigned for the excessive developing of Bogor, Puncak, Cipanas, and Cianjur since the year of 1960. In 1978 he was told that his commentary—about a factory building that may impact The Toba Lake—upset the President (Soeharto). Still in the tough confidence toward the signal of the country leader who tended to insist his policy, the professor’s answer was short. “That’s fine. At least Mr.President read (my criticism).”

However, the professor whose side job was teaching highschool student (wow!) was also admired by colleagues. The former Indonesian living environmental minister Emil Salim was also his student. Beside his environmental expertise, he was one of the pioneers in molecular biology study in Indonesia.

My tiny page is of course not a sufficient amount to contain Professor Otto Soemarwoto’s large brilliance, however it is my true respect regarding for his principle and endeavor especially in his struggle for environment and science. Hearing his passing away is my grief and I pray for his spirit.
